Another night with The Grates. By far it was the most entertaining set they've done. Patience was at the top of her game tonight providing many laughs with her stories and observations. Their power pop music works just as well in the tiny confines of Pianos. Here's what happened tonight.
There is this old guy who I see often at show who video tapes the whole performance. He'll stand in front of people and wals back and forth in front of the stage trying to get different angels. I think what he does is transfers the tape to DVDs and sells them at record conventions without the band's permission. Either that or he's a pervert. Well, one of the Grates' people told him not to do, so he made a big huff about it. Patience sees him packing up and tries to hook him up with a lady in the crowd. He doesn't care, so Patience says, "Excuse me, sir. I know you're not paying attention to me, but I think I found a girl for you." She went on to point out other couples, including Keith and Chris from We Are Scientists with their respective partners.
As she did at Bowery the night before, she displayed her skills with the floor routine ribbon for "Rock Boys". This time, she asked the crowd to part like the Red Sea so she can perform the song in the middle of the floor. Bet the last show you saw didn't have that. What was cute was that she said that she tried to do this in the "Midlands" and nobody would move. She meant to say "Midwest." Tee hee.
This is John's shirt. I never asked if he'd actually been to Atlantic City.
The best stage banter of the night is a story Patience told about taping an episode of Fearless TV that afternoon. She found fans, so she decided to play with them or as she put it, "I found these fans and they were blowing me." HEY YOOO! She demonstrated the diva posses she was doing. She then preceded to pick her nose because she's had a cold. While all of this is happened, a camera was on her and a bunch of stoner crew members were laughing at her. This then brought on the topic of sticking straws up babies noses to suck out boogers. Good times.
Ms. Hodgson played the "I squish your head" game with us.
You can read more on Pae in my interview with her from July.

i ran into patience and john on the sidewalk outside pianos last night without realizing they were there for a gig. (i was on my way to mercury for pete yorn.) when i recognized them from the night before, i said, "oh hey, it's the grates! saw you opening for the dears." and told them they were awesome, or great, or something like that. what a charming band. i am looking forward to more of them.

Never knew about Punkcast. I'll be sure NOT to buy anything from him. He probably also goes to movies and secretly tapes the screen and then sells it on the streets.
