Guess how many bobbies I saw today?
I thought I was done with concerts for 2006, until I got the offer to come see night one of Brazilian Girls end of the year's show. It was a crazy show to say to least. I think any show that features girls stripping on stage can't be a bad thing. The only times I've seen it was early this year when Morningwood hired some Suicide Girls for their encore and when I saw Peaches open for Elastica on their last tour. That wasn't so hot.
Brazilian Girls are one of those New York-based bands that always seem to playing a gig in the city. In the past couple of years they've gained more notoriety for their international dance beat music. It must be music journalism law that when you write about the band, you need to mention that they are not Brazilian and they are not all girls. Well, duh.
The center of the band is Sabina Sciubba, the best disco queen on the scene today. Yes, more charismatic and talented then Goldfrapp, Ana Matronic or Annie. With her trademark veil and dark make-up covering her eyes, she's the classy party girl you want in your circle of friends. With her German heritage and ability to speak multiple language, she gives of the aura of being well-traveled and well-versed in world music.
Their self-titled debut album was the perfect introduction to the band, a multi-cultural dance record with catchy choruses and a lounge atmosphere. You do get that Brazilian feel, along with break-beats, ska horns and tango rhythms. Their new album, Talk to La Bomb, has a harder edge to some of the songs and is a little more political in slant, which was evident in Friday night's performance. Sabina would pull phrases out of her top hot and rip them up. "In the 2007, let's get rid of FEAR." She would then rip up pieces of paper with the words Dick, Bush and War.
Obviously their live show is where the party is at. Even their songs that are a little more slow in tempo, live they have a grand quality. It must be that hard bassline that seems to overwhelm the room. Some of the new songs aren't as dynamic as their debut album. That first album has all the catchy choruses.
Sabina is not a crazy girl when she's on stage, but can dance seductively without while maintaining that air of cool.
As mentioned before their were naked people. There was on artist on the Irving Plaza elevated platform painting buildings, naked women, pianos and the such. All of sudden, during the band's third song, some girl climbed down from the balcony and just took all her clothes off, hoping that the artist would paint her. She was up there for about a minute until someone stopped the proceedings. It was a damn shame because she was pretty cute.
Then during their finale of "Don't Stop" and "Pussy," Sabina invited anyone on stage to get naked. Well, plenty of girls got on stage, just one or two took off their tops. Three or four became 200 by the end of "Don't Stop." My philosophy with jumping on stage to dance is that a handful is good, but when it becomes overcrowded, it ceases to be entertaining for the audience on the floor to watch. It's like, "That's nice, can all the ugly people get off the stage?" Obviously, someone fittingly handed Sabina some weed during "Pussy."
The show went on longer then should. I figured the show should have ended when the show was getting out of control, but then they fitted in a few slow jams at the end. Anyway, Brazilian Girls are definitely a must-see live band, even without the nudity. With all the meshing of dance genres, you're guaranteed to find your groove.

Apparently someone sprayed a fire extinguisher by the side doors. It smelled like death and filled the area with a horrible cloud. A bunch of people cleared out for a bit, but later headed back in.

Oh the fire extinguisher was insane. We were tripping veryy veryy hard that night on LSD and Mescaline, and when everybody started running to the exits because of the noxious gas we got really scared. I enjoyed the pussy and the marijuana in any event, and there seemed to be more access to the front after the extinguisher shit.
