Not many surprises and a few repeat winners among this year's list and lot of debut albums:
Arctic Monkeys, Favourite Worst Nightmare: No surprise, last year's winner
Basquiat Strings, Basquiat Strings: There's usually one on the list that's not rock/pop/dance oriented. Their deal from their website: Basquiat Strings are a five piece string group with their own repertoire of originals (composed by cellist Ben Davis) and arrangements. Ben finds inspiration from the raucous, driving Hungarian string groups of Transylvania, the luxuriously rich Brahms sextets and the unruly compositions and workshop arrangements of Charles Mingus.
Bat For Lashes, Fur And Gold: She'll coming through the U.S. starting July 23rd at Maxwell's.
Dizzee Rascal, Maths & English: The 2004 winner.
Klaxons, Myths Of The Near Future: No surprise.
Maps, We Can Create: I've been meaning to check this band, heard nothing but good things
New Young Pony Club, Fantastic Playroom: A lot of dance rock bands on the list this year.
Jamie T, Panic Prevention: Yeee haw, he just in Brooklyn recent, now stop with the solo stuff and bring the whole band.
Fionn Regan, The End Of History: He'll be playing Joe's Pub on July 24.
The View, Hats Off To The Buskers: One hopes their parents accompany them to the show.
Amy Winehouse, Back To Black: No surprise, pray for an open bar.
Young Knives, Voices of Animals And Men: This is awesome. I had thought they couldn't pull it off but a few voters took their perfectly crafted post-punk songs.
