I figure this space has really become a place to promote my friends and the like. No matter. To the right is a picture of my home girl Natalie Walker. She's a singer-songwriter based out of Philadelphia and I think you'll gravitate towards her sound if you're into trip hop like me. Her voice is pretty damn unreal. I'm amazed how these singers can portray so many emotions and ranges in their songs.
To give you a little background of Natalie, she's originally from Indiana before making Philly her homebase. She was originally the lead singer of the local electronic/trip hop outfit Daughter Darling. Last year, she released her solo debut album, Urban Angel. You won't have to go far to hear her music because it's been feature in some pretty high profile shows and such. Check this out, "Circles" was used this season on Grey's Anatomy, "No One Else" was used in an episode of Girlfriends and the Thievery Corporation remixed "Quicksand" to be used on Ugly Betty. The one show I've actually seen is an episode of Entourage that used "No One Else". Finally, the highest profile placement for her was "Quicksand" being used in the trailer for Maria Antoinette. So, yeah, she's out there big time.
It's obvious why her music is sought after, it's completely chill out, sexy tunes. It can be dark and mysterious or ethereal and transcendent depending on your mood. It's very much in the same vein of Portishead, Hooverphonic, Faithless and some of Moby's quieter tracks. The difference with her is that her voice has a nod towards a jazzy, torch song singer. She can straddle both the jazz and electronic worlds.
Live, she's a pretty easy to get into. While Friday night was a hell of rainy day, she packed in the Living Room. I can always tell if people are enjoying the set if they shut up, and people were pretty still. Yeah, she can stop you in your tracks.
I'm surprised that her music is in a lot of media, but she's remains kind of anonymous. Anyway, check her tunes out and you'll see she's a great find.
