Big Annoucement Time: I've Got My Own Internet/HD Radio Show
The Ultimate Mix-Tape
That's right, cousins. If you like this space, you'll love it in full dynamic CD sound. ahhhhh ohhhhhh
It's one of the cool things that has happened to me with my new found attention. Hosting a radio show was my final goal of 2008, and it's in the books. Starting June 5th, noon EST, I'll be hosting my two-hour show that you can hear online and in select markets on HD Radio.
What the hell are you playing?
I'm calling it the Ultimate Mix-Tape (another slight High Fidelity homage) because, simply, I'll play songs I think you'll like. It will be from bands I've profiled here, acts I've seen live, advance tracks and older music you might have missed along the way. It's nice that I can play anything I want, so it will go beyond the traditional indie sound. Meaning, no Vampire Weekend, EVER. For the first show, I'll be playing Foals, Lykke Li, Black Angels, Monkey Swallows the Universe, Royworld and Ladyhawke -- to name a few.
How can I listen?
Online is the best way. The show will be on the Undies/Indie channel for HD Radio. This will be the direct stream (right now is their normal programming) so you can tune in every Thursday from noon-2pm EST and a repeat of the show will be on Friday, 4pm-6pm EST. Allow me to be your "getting ready for the weekend" host. If you're on the west coast, it will air online at 9am-11am on Thursdays and the Friday repeat is 1-3pm.
I will post the link every Thursday morning so you can tune-in and I'll eventually have a permanent link somewhere on the sides on this site.
The best part ... it's free.
How does HD Radio work?
You buy an HD Radio unit from your retailer of choice. They go for $100-$200. There's no subscription fee.
You listen to your normal station, say WXPN 88.5FM in Philadelphia. Turn to HD1, and you get 88.5 in CD-quality sound. It's pretty cool, it sounds like the DJ is right next to you. Turn to HD2, and you listen to their alternative broadcast, Y-Rock on XPN, also in CD-quality sound.
It's new technology so the market will eventually grow. It's standard in most Ford cars. Like HDTV, people will catch on.
I happen to have an HD Radio, can I listen to the show through that?
It's on in a handful of markets, and hopefully more will be added.
If you are in these areas (big ups to my peoples in San Jose), the show will always air at noon-2pm on Thursdays and 4-6pm on Friday, no matter what time zone
The HD Radio markets where you can tune in:
- Orlando: 101.1 WJRR
- Oklahoma City: 94.7 KHBZ
- Jacksonville: 107.3 WPLA
- San Jose: 104.9 KCNL
- Little Rock: 100.3 KDJE
- Raleigh: 100.7 WRVA
- Honolulu: 101.9 KUCD
- Charlotte: 106.5 WEND
- Houston: 94.5 KTBZ
What can I do?
When the show airs, I would love your feedback. Like what you heard, got suggestions, hate the sound of my voice -- drop me a line.
I'll eventually post the playlist after the show so you can find the songs and bands for yourself. I'll have a permanent place for it here somewhere.
It's a new thing for me, so I'm having fun planning out the show. I have to work on my radio voice so I don't sound like the morning zoo guys that David Cross makes fun of in his act.

Congrats. I love your blog. Your music selections for the first show are great. I particulary love Lykke Li, which I recently saw live at El Rey.
