If you answered, name of a porn star or a roller derby player, then you lost.
We have plenty of singers from the U.K. coming into our fold with hopes of replacing Amy Winehouse without that nasty crack smell. They might have different styles and they all probably hate to be compare to her. It happens in the music business, you find one successful singer and other companies try to find somebody in the same vein.
The front runner to gain the heart and minds of retro soul enthusiasts is this Duffy girl that the BBC were touting at the beginning of the year. I know nothing about the girl, other than that's she's young, blonde and from Wales. More importantly, I have to be honest, her album, Rockferry, is dynamite despite a couple of bland tunes. The production is outstanding and truly captures that Dusty in Memphis sound. I know, major label, mainstream singer, played on radio ... and I love it. Damn, what happened to me?
In any event, the one that has been spinning in my iPod is the debut album from Liverpool's Candie Payne. Called I Wish I Could Have Loved You More has more of that 60s British Mod quality that I love. Austin Powers wouldn't mind shagging to this album. Like the Duffy album, it's a short time wise and you understand fairly quickly what she's achieving with mood and style. Her voice isn't particularily flashy which is great because the music is dynamic as is.
The title track could have been the theme to the lost Connery bond film from the last 60s. Look, listen and love...
Since that Mark Ronson character is all over the place, he took to producing one of the tracks, "One More Chance" -- a Ronettes meets breakbeats ear pleaser. As much as I don't appreciate the superstar producer/celebrity (Timbaland, Pharrel Williams), Ronson has some taste. He's been trotting her along on some live dates.
According to her myspace page, she'll be opening up some dates for Jay-Z on his European arena tour.
