Allow me to introduce you to your new favorite band -- San Diego's Delta Spirit. No need to search far and wide for a band that channels the spirit of The Band, Woody Guthrie and Creedence, and then make it seem fresh and original. Their early show at Mercury Lounge was a pure pleasure to see. They almost made me forget of Dr. Dog with their rough-around-the edges, honky tonk-via-traditional country & western style.
The setlist:
- People C'mon
- Strange Vine
- Streetwalker
- House Built For Two
- St. Francis
- Vivian
- Children
- Bleeding Bells
- Trashcan
- St. James
- Tomorrow Goes Away
- People, Turn Around!
While their music is steeped in traditional roots rock and gospel, the Delta Spirit bring a lot more energy to the genre. While they don't verve into hardcore punk territory like the Avett Brothers, the Delta have a strong pulse throughout their song. I was amazed how much more percussion they use live. They bang away, causing many people swaying along the beat. Songs like "Trashcan" and "Children" were real crowd pleasures.

delta spirit is not from san diego. their members are from sd, orange county and los angeles, and i think they live in la. they're still good, though.
