One of the most useful, and hysterically funny, websites is back and better than ever. The comprehensive Canonical List of Weird Band Names has been passed around for a good decade, eventually ending up back where it started. I'll have the fellas explain:
A few of us at Bright Lights Film Journal, along with our pals White People Lie, started the Canonical List of Weird Band Names back in 1995 as an amusing side project. A year or two later, we handed it over to a fan named Chelle, who lovingly maintained the site for a while before moving on to other things. While Googling down memory lane, we discovered that our beloved list had been mentioned or completely reproduced on hundreds of web sites. This odd success from our long-gone youth has inspired us to take up the site again. Hey, we're too old for the mosh pit now, but we're not too old to laugh.
Now I can keep up with the likes of Gaza Strippers, Pancakes for Penguins and Hitler Stole My Potato. I don't make them up. My only hope is that all 1,000 bands listed have myspace pages.
