White Denim is one of those bands that I know the name, but couldn't tell you what they sound like. That changed quickly when I saw their set in the circus tent at Hop Farm. I said, "Damn, boys. You guys throw that shit down." The three-piece from Austin, TX were the only Americans I found on the grounds.
These cats play a funked-up, gospel-inspired blues rock that will grab your soul and shake it around a bit. There's a lot of screaming and facial contortions from lead singer James Petralli, while drummer Josh Block goes hog wild. These guys play like their are possessed by the devil. Sometimes, the songs evolve into a some sort of psych-rock, free form jam. It's one of those things where you need to see in person, but you do get a sense of their style in their records. Their album from last year, Exposion, has a lot of added elements like piano, some electronic beats and horns. They just released their follow-up, Fits.
