Must give my props and congratulations to Brooklyn Vegan for putting together another fine CMJ showcase. I always appreciate the recognition he gives to this space and for allowing his readers to hate me.
What a difference a year makes for Fanfarlo. My donut-eating London buddies first came through these parts last year for CMJ, but now they are downright expert and confident performers. The large stage suits them well for their rousing choruses and invigorating melodies. The added element for this show was handing out plastic accordion-like tubes. You basically twirl these things over your head and they make a whirling noise. I grabbed one and managed to hit Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons in the head. My bad.
As Simon said in his visit to this space, the group enjoys using all sorts of unusual instruments for their recordings and shows. I'd like to know how they got a musical saw through homeland security. In any event, their set was just as perfect as you can ask for -- fun to watch and listen to.
The band comes back in December for a date at Webster Hall. Well, that was quick. They are one of those bands I wish nothing but good things and notoriety.
Bother Antlers and Laura Marling were at their best. The hall was packed for The Antlers set, which leads me to believe that they will be one of the breakout bands to emerge from this year's CMJ.

Chris! As if it hadn't been awkward enough with MM!
