The name of the band gives me a chance to bring out my list of bands that are named after places that are not from: Tokyo Police Club, Barcelona, Tokio Hotel, Bombay Bicycle Club, I'm From Barcelona, Vietnam, Beirut, Phoenix, Texas, Boards of Canada, Of Montreal, Brazilian Girls, Vietnam, The Bronx, French Kicks, Harlem Shakes, Beirut, Architecture in Helsinki. ¡Forward, Russia! Did I miss anybody?
Anyway, the duo above is from Australia. And the name, Philadelphia Grand Jury, comes from the Fiery Furnaces song. Their music ranges from the power pop prowess of their debut song and video for the track, "The Good News" to the static-like, garage soul of "Going to the Casino." It's the happy middle zone between King Khan & The Shrines and Supergrass.
From their bio: Philadelphia Grand Jury has always been two friends: Berkfinger and MC Bad Genius. Between these two childhood buddies of some 20 years one observes a strange, tedious and sometimes very complicated relationship that always manages to somehow end up in a smart and ruff pop song. Do they even like each other? No one really knows.
The good news for us is that they'll play a couple of NYC dates, along with SXSW.
April 26: Musexpo -- Los Angeles
April 28: Union Pool -- Brooklyn
April 29: Pianos -- New York
