One of the disadvantages of being in my music snobbery bubble is not knowing how popular bands are or have become. Take our subject of this post, The Avett Brothers, who are just about one hit album away from headlining stadiums. Their set during the evening put the crowd in an even higher state of excitement. I looked behind me at one point and no one was sitting down in their seats, even the people in wheelchair section were levitating from the sheer awesomeness of the Brothers.
The setlist:
- Murder in the City
- Talk on Indolence
- And It Spread
- The Fall
- Down with the Shine
- Will You Return?
- January Wedding
- Paranoia in B-Flat Major
- At the Beach
- Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise
- I and Love and You
- Go to Sleep
- Kick Drum Heart
I do admit that I had fallen out of flavor with the Avetts and I have no reason for this. I could pull the snobbery card and say that because they became so popular that it's not the same. To backtrack, I hadn't seen them since 2005 when I first started this blog. I first saw them open up for BR5-49 and then headline Bowery Ballroom a few months later. I remember them being wild and unhinged. It was just them and another upright bass player throwing down like it was nobody's business.
Fast forward to this past weekend, I got an up-close look at them again in front of 10,000+ people and they were just as insane as they were back in the day. The difference is that since they have a more songs to choose, they can change up the tempo and bring down the mood. It doesn't have to all screams, jumping and banging away like a crack-fueled honky tonkin' hoe-down. I wasn't a big fan of their Rick Rubin-produced I And Love And You. Rubin tends to strip band's down to their bare essence so that their voices are the focal point. I tend to think the Avett thrive on destroying the instruments and hollering their soul out. They remind me of the Pogues, in that they take a traditional style and give it a punk-like attitude. That element is still in their live show, which shows the boys sweating and working out their demons. By the end of their set, they looked like they were put through the ringer.
Their sixth full-length album, The Carpenter, will be out on September 11th via Universal.
