It goes to show, I don't know bollocks. I was certain Kate Bush would be on the Mercury Prize list and win. Instead, the slot alotted to a music veteran or legend goes to Richard Hawley, for his Standing At The Sky’s Edge. This is his second nomination for the Sheffield native.
Alt-J, An Awesome Wave
Ben Howard, Every Kingdom
Django Django, Django Django
Field Music, Plumb
Jessie Ware, Devotion
Lianne La Havas, Is Your Love Big Enough?
Michael Kiwanuka, Home Again
Plan B, Ill Manors
Richard Hawley, Standing at the Sky’s Edge
Roller Trio, Roller Trio
Sam Lee, Ground Of Its Own
The Maccabees, Given To The Wild
As a whole, the list is kind of meh. There's no traditional rock band. The Maccabees is as close as you'll get. I'm glad for Django Django, Hawley and Field Music, who were almost done for a few years ago.
Snubs for Kate Bush, Florence and Emeli Sande.
Everybody's money is going on Alt-J. I'm going for Lianne La Havas for the upset.
A few names on the list that are new to me. Roller Trio is an experiment jazz outfit from Lees while Sam Lee is a real low-key singer-songwriter who makes antiqued, 19th century roots-folk songs. Check out "George Collins" below:

Oh listen, the Mercury judges get it wrong every year! Last year they snubbed wild beasts 'smother'! On the contrary, the wild beasts smother has led them to play at every major musical festival worldwide! Receiving rave reviews for performances! So just remember that the whole mercury thang is highly subjective! I know why Radiohead don't give a toss!
Oh yes and where is Kate bush this year? Fiona kid?
