I've been doing this blog long enough to spot a band on the verge of something special. Now, I thought local duo MS MR were pretty outstanding when I saw them last summer at Glasslands. They had confidence, panache and a unique sound. Tonight, they headlined the first of two sold out shows at Mercury Lounge, and it's just apparent that this is the first big step. By the end of the year, they will be everywhere. I don't where everywhere is but I'm sure it will be fun.
Any discussion about MS MR should begin with their sound. Dark, yes, but a romantic, theatrical dark. If you see their supercut videos, you'll know they love old horror films, namely the Hammer horror films of Britain and 60s Italian B-horror films. The organ sound permeates their songs. To undercut that you have some 80s Eurodisco, new wave -- throwback dance beats, electronics, all that good stuff.
I think the most of the attention on the duo will go towards Lizzy Plapinger, who is also one of the founders of Neon Gold Records. I remember thinking when I saw her last June, "This chick can throw the fuck down." A sincerely strong, commanding voice drives their music. She also owns the stage, she struts around, slyly smiles and has the look that says, "Yo, take notice, bitches." Finally, she'll be fashion plate for all the NYC scenesters. HOT PANTS! are the parachute pants.
For 2013, Lizzy and partner Max Hershenow will finalize a debut album for Columbia Records and tour every inch of the world. They'll be so big they'll be heard on every commercial and TV show. That's when I can disown them for being sell outs. OHHHHHH. I kid. I kid because I love.
In the meantime, just download Candy Bar Creep Show EP, it has Hurricane, which you have heard plenty of time by now. Right? RIIIGHT?. Their next single is called Fantasy with a video to debut any day.

Damn, looks like a good show. I've been hearing "Bones" a lot on the radio- great song, great pipes... and yes, great pants!
